From Sketch to Reality ~ A Halloween Flag

This is one of my Halloween flags from a couple years ago. I thought I would demonstrate how sometimes your concept doesn’t always get produced exactly as you designed…

Here are both my sketch and the file sent for production.

And here is the actual flag. Notice the difference?

This was done while the company was still producing appliqué flags ~ where the different colors are actually different pieces of fabric sewn together. Nowadays these flags are printed and stitching is added to give it the same appearance. I am sure this is more cost-effective to produce and as a designer, it gives a little more options where color is concerned and the design is actually produced as designed.

The biggest difference between my original art and the actual flag here is the eyes. I feel that that one small difference changes it from being a really cute design to just a cute Halloween design. Am I too picky?

    Hi BJ….

thanks for sharing all these progress shots…how cool is it to see your work from start to finish…and I see what you mean about the change from the original to the finished flag…you are like me when it comes to being picky …but it still looks amazing!!!

I wish I could get more involved in some of this surface design work…looks like so much fun and when you see a product it must be very exciting…

ok…as a really lousy sketcher myself I am impressed with how cute (and accurate to your final work) it is in the sketch form! My sketches are kind of scary…
I have to admit your original is way cuter than the final product, but still the flag is cute and I do think other people don’t notice those details like we do about our own work! We are too picky by nature…but I think that’s a good thing!

yep, the eyes are so much cuter and expressive in your drawing than on the finished piece. And the mint green bottom, well, I’m sure that took you by surprise too!

I’m just like you when it comes to styles..I’m all over the place and love and appreciate almost any style as long as it’s well done, which you do!

The flag is cute! I do see the difference in the eyes. In yours he’s looking up at the bird and in the final it just looks like the shape of the eyes. It’s amazing how just the slightest difference can change the whole thing.
I love your blog and am enjoying browsing through it. I live in FLorida too-but have a much different life. No sailboat or trips to Europe-sigh Maybe one day:)
I’m also very curious about how you began designing products. I’ll keep looking through your blog maybe I’ll find some clues…
    Have a great day!
